ACO team: Anglicans at the UN

Giving Voice to our Faith for Global Justice and Peace

The Anglican Communion Office stands with Anglicans in advocating for justice, peace, and equality. It represents the distinctive voice of Anglicans in civil society and at the United Nations regarding the needs of people and planet.

Worldwide, churches are often the places people run to when crisis or hardship strikes. Churches are there before a crisis occurs, seeing the warning signs, and they are there after it has passed to rebuild.

Our international advocacy strengths trust between churches and international organisations, particularly UN Peacekeeping and Refugee responses, to maximise the impact of our efforts to reduce conflict, relieve suffering, transform injustice and restore creation

The ACO connect grassroots Anglican voices with global forums, amplifying their witness to advocate for justice, peace, and creation.

  • From the grassroots to the global stage, we amplify the voices of Anglicans on the frontlines of conflict and climate crisis to shape international policy.
MISSION IN ACTION

Advocacy Areas

Informed by listening to member churches, current advocacy areas focus on the most pressing challenges affecting communities and creation worldwide.

Peace and Reconciliation

Uniquely placed to convene in conflict, the ACO connects local mediation work — in contexts like the DRC and South Sudan — with global networks like the UN. By amplifying peacemaking amidst conflict, we share the insights of local peacemakers to inform international responses to crisis and violence.

Environment

Grounded in the Fifth Mark of Mission, our advocacy at UN Climate Conferences calls for urgent restoration amidst environmental breakdown. We urge governments to safeguard creation by integrating indigenous wisdom and prioritising environmental justice for the communities most affected by the climate crisis.

Refugee and Migration Crisis

Through the UNHCR Multi-Religious Council of Leaders, we advocate for the world’s most vulnerable. Committed to hospitality amidst displacement, we partner with governments to address humanitarian crises, strengthen conflict prevention, and help displaced people find safe routes to a hopeful future.

The priorities that shape our advocacy

Anglican advocacy is a conversation, not a monologue.

To speak with authenticity and authority at the United Nations and in other global forums, the ACO weaves the lived experiences, prophetic insights, and unique wisdom of communities from across the Anglican Communion.

We are especially committed to amplifying the voices of those who are often marginalised, ensuring our work is truly representative of the whole Body of Christ.

Listening to Our Local Churches

We listen to churches facing conflict, crisis, and injustice around the world. Their first-hand witness is the essential foundation of our global advocacy work.

Developing Dialogue in Centres of Change

We work with our churches as they advocate for change through national governments, businesses, investors and international negotiations. With official consultative status at the United Nations, our team provides a distinctive Anglican voice in global conversations.

Prioritising Marginalised Voices

So often, the voices of women, youth and Indigenous Peoples, are sidelined. Hearing their voices is essential for meaningful change that responds to God’s leading.

Unifying Globally for Change

When Anglicans come together, led by God, the impact is powerful. We share concerns from international discussions with our churches and weave together their responses to create momentum behind transformation. We are imperfectly part of the body of Christ, seeking to show love where that is lacking around the world.
